Keith Garland, RN
What is your fondest memory from your 25 years working at Dartmouth-Hitchcock?
There are many fond memories, but they all have a similar theme—moments when I realize I’ve made a positive impact in someone’s life. When my words or actions help someone, either directly or indirectly, whether the effect is subtle or profound, it is in those instances when I remember the importance of the work we do here.
What about your job inspires you?
I have always been in awe of how resilient nurses are. It is difficult to drag yourself out of bed before dawn, drive 20 miles in a nor'easter only to spend 12 hours on your feet dealing with stressful situations. Then go home, dust yourself off and do it all over again the next day.
What do you like best about your department?
The camaraderie between the staff members and the knowledge that we all share a common goal, which is to provide excellent care to our patients despite our fast-paced environment.
