Melissa D. Kiernan
Senior Clinical Secretary
What is your fondest memory from your 25 years working at Dartmouth-Hitchcock?
My most enjoyable memories are seeing my co-workers grow in their careers and their personal lives over the years. They have watched my family grow as well. Being part of this work family has been very special to me.
What inspires you?
Working in the Hematology department. Many of the patients I work with are dealing with serious health issues. I find it amazing that with everything they go through, they continue to be kind, respectful and light-hearted.
Our patients inspire me to be strong, to know that every day could always be worse and that you need to focus on the good. I get a lesson in perspective every day. The dedication of our providers and the secretaries I work with inspires me.
What do you like best about your department?
Working alongside our providers is amazing. I am treated as an integral part of the team, and I feel valued. The amount of time, thought and care that our providers dedicate to every patient they see is truly remarkable. I know our patients are in great hands, and I am honored to work alongside them.
How has COVID-19 affected your work?
Our work volumes have increased since instituting new procedures for certain tasks. I was fortunate that I could work remotely. This helped me balance my work and home life. Without the flexibility that D-H has shown, it would have been very difficult for me.
