Susan Eichholz, RN, BSC, OCN
1 West Hematology-Oncology
What is your fondest memory in your 25 years working at Dartmouth-Hitchcock?
My fondest memory is the work we did on innovations. We put our patients and families in the center of our circle and worked with them to change the way we delivered care. The work was trying new technology, focusing on futuristic nursing care and thinking outside the box. It was exciting and a big success. Our nurse engagement was the best I had ever seen and our patients benefited from the work we accomplished.
What about your job inspires you?
Our patients and the 1 West staff inspire me every day. Each day brings new challenges and rewards and I embrace them all hoping to make a difference. From the beginning of my nursing career, I was drawn to the oncology patient population. Their desire to live is strong, and they are willing to do anything to have more time with their loved ones. We build trusting relationships with our patients and their families that last over time. We celebrate life and give meaning to their end of life by creating lasting memories for their loved ones. It is truly an honor to be an oncology nurse.
What do you like best about your department?
The 1 West staff and the collaboration with our providers is what I have always loved best about working here at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. My job is creating the next generation of oncology nurses. It is so wonderful to see a new nurse gain the confidence to speak up and advocate for patients. Our nurses have each other's backs and we truly believe that "teamwork makes the dreamwork." We value collaboration with our providers, which means respect for all that contribute to the care of our patients. We have an amazing leadership team, which makes life pleasant to come to work each day. I have been very lucky to call 1 West my home unit for the last 25 years.
