Taking Care In This Section

Yoni Stevens

Mental Health Coordinator for the Cystic Fibrosis Center, Office of Care Management

What is your fondest memory from your 25 years working at Dartmouth-Hitchcock?

It is hard to pick just one. There have been many wonderful and sometimes hilarious celebratory gatherings and retreats over the years both with Care Management, and more recently with the CF [Cystic Fibrosis] Team colleagues. One memory that stands out is when Heather Yurgeles, MSW, retired several years ago. Her social work colleagues surprised her by arriving at her house to drive Heather to DHMC in a stretch limousine on her last day of work. There was a red carpet with a trumpeter to announce her arrival at the Main Entrance along with other colleagues and many bewildered passersby. This sort of creative energy along with lots of laughter are a joyful part of these past 25 years.

What about your job/work inspires you?

The patients and families I have met and worked with over the years have been truly inspiring. As a social worker I've often met them as they were experiencing extremely challenging situations and life ending illnesses. Many have shared their wisdom and perspective with me about living life well until the end. I've had the honor to witness families giving so much love and support to patients along this journey. In addition, our CF patients and families continue to inspire me daily by their resilience, determination, and sometimes sheer chutzpah in the face of this lifelong disease. Our patients inspire me and remind of the power of love and hope.

What do you like best about working in your department?

I've had the pleasure of knowing and working with some truly exceptional people over the years from all disciplines (but my social work colleagues hold a special place in my heart). Collaborating with my colleagues, especially when working on particularly daunting situations, has been a gift. The many Office of Care Management colleagues with whom I've shared offices over the past 25 years (you know who you are!) have been terrific people who made coming to work a joy.
